                            Torque Tube Drive

1.A torque tube drive consists of a hollow tube
between the axle casing and a cup fixed on the frame
to reduce (or) eliminate the duties of resisting torque
reaction and the thrust.

2.The spring has to carry only the side thrust and body
weight as the braking torque, torque reaction and the
driving thrust has been taken by the hollow tube.

3.In this, only one universal joint is necessary and
no sliding joint is used. Sometimes turns rods are
used along with the torque tubes.

4.Both these torque tube and turns rods brace the
differential housing to prevent excessive movement
of the driving and braking torques.

5.In addition to this, there is no deflection in the
geometry of spring and no change in the length of
propeller shaft due to loads etc.

                               Hotch Kiss Drive

1. The essential components of hotch kiss drive are,
(i) Propeller shaft
(ii) Two universal joints
(iii) Slip joint

2.The spring is fixed mightly in the middle to the rear
axle. Spring is fixed rigidly in the middle of the rear
axle. The front end of the spring is fixed rigidly on the
frame, while the rear end is fixed in a shackle. The front
half of springs transmits driving thrust to the frame.

3.The propeller shaft is provided with two universal
joints and also a sliding joint. One universal joint is
at the front and another at the rear.

4.Driving and braking torqued and developed in the
vehicle and these are taken care by two universal
joints provided.

5. The slip joint compensate the difference in length of                                                                                                             the propeller shaft caused by changes in its angularity.

This is the most widely used and simplest type of rear
axle drive. In this drive springs not only takes the weight of a
body but also take the torque reaction, driving thrust and
side thrust.

The propeller shaft is provided with two universal
joints and also a sliding joint. The spring is fixed rightly in the
middle, to the rear axle. Spring is fixed rigidly in the middle of
rear axle. The front end of the spring is fixed rigidly on the
frame, while the rear end is fixed in a shackle. The front half of
the springs transmits driving thrust to the frame.

The propeller shaft which is connected between the
gearbox and differential has two universal joints. One at the
front and another at the rear. This is needed because when
the vehicle is moving forward the vehicle tend to stay back
and during motion when the brakes are applied the tendency
of the vehicle to move forward. Therefore driving and braking
torqued are developed in the vehicle and these are taken care
by two universal joints provided. The slip joints compensate
the difference in length of the propeller shaft caused by
changes in its angularity, when the axle move up and down
due to road irregularities with the springs.
